Sustainability at Hotel Petrus
We live in a real paradise. Forests and meadows, well-kept surroundings, a sense of togetherness in the village and a thriving economy. And we love nature around our hotel and don't take it for granted.
In order to preserve the beauty of our living space for future generations, sustainability is more than just a buzzword for us, but a self-evident task that we fulfil conscientiously in a variety of ways.
Sustainability has always been a priority for us - even when no one was talking about it, Papa Hans was always making an effort. Here we have tried to write down everything we do. And something new is added every day.
Architecture & Design
In 1977, when the hotel was built, care was taken to orient it so that it would receive plenty of sun from early morning until late at night. On the one hand for the well-being of the guests, but also to keep energy costs low.
Untreated local larch wood was used for the hotel façade and the new wing which was constructed in 2015, was completely made of wood.
During the renovations, we worked and still continue to primarily work with local companies in order to support the local economic cycle. For instance, our hydraulic engineer and electrician, come directly from the village.
You could also call it saving, but we are convinced that you don't always have to buy everything new. We try to incorporate old things and find a new use for them in every renovation. And we like to turn "waste" into art, for example we have made all the pictures hanging in the spa area ourselves, from the wood waste of the carpenters.
We love our Nature
Where possible, we have planted flowering greenery on the roofs (e.g. the roof of the swimming pool or the roof at the hotel entrance) and thus offer a habitat for insects such as bees and ants.
When designing the menu, our chef makes sure to cook seasonally and regionally. We work first and foremost with local producers.
In summer, most of the vegetables, salads and herbs come directly from our own production from our vegetable garden. There, natural fertilisation is set by steaming the soil and watered using collected rainwater.
The floral decorations used in the hotel are home-grown and come directly from our own garden. Some of the plants are already grown in winter.
Think smart
We don't use plastic! We are happy because we have the best tap water and our guests can order or get it in already filled glass bottles free of charge and at any time. Water is free throughout the stay, including during dinner.
When choosing yoghurts we also prefer producers who use glass instead of plastic. Not to forget: the empty yoghurt jars are then reused in-house for our homemade jams and chutneys.
There is a lot of laundry in the hotel. This has an impact on the water as well as the environment. That is why we only do laundry when our guests indicate that they want us to do so by leaving towels on the floor. In addition, there is our (brand new) Green Day. Guests can choose against having their rooms cleaned on this day and thus make a contribution to saving energy.
By regularly checking the appliances used in the hotel (coffee machines, dishwashers, washing machines, etc....), we ensure that the right amount of energy is being used.
One thing is for sure: A lot of electricity is consumed at a hotel. Whether for cooking, heating, lighting or in the wellness area. We also produce a small part of the electricity ourselves. With the photovoltaic systems on our hotel roof. Even though it might not be much in relation, it is a start.
Hot water and electricity is available throughout the hotel through district heating.
Smart heating: Intelligent room controls regulate the heating. The heating is only turned on when someone is inside the room, and the heating is automatically turned off when the room is being aired out.
We refrain from printing and sending new print materials every year and prefer to rely on long-term information that is sent by email in order to reduce the Co2 waste.
Careful and professional waste separation and recycling. Food waste is also professionally collected by organic waste disposal companies and turned into compost. Suitable green waste is donated to a farm, where it is fed directly to animals.
LED lamps have been in use in all hotel rooms since 2018.
Our outdoor lighting is controlled by a daylight control system. Thus, the economical LED lamps and spotlights only switch on when they are really needed and are not on all night long.
Car-free holiday: Guests can use all public transport in South Tyrol free of charge.
Car-free holidays start at home. Guests arriving by train will receive a QR code in advance, with which they can travel by train from Brenner to Bruneck free of charge, and we will pick them up in Bruneck with our hotel shuttle bus.
As far as possible, we drive with e-cars or e-bikes and offer our guests a charging station.
Social responsibility
We take our social responsibility very seriously. That is why we work with small suppliers, sponsor local events and clubs, and offer our services not only to guests who holiday here, but also to locals.
Most of our employees come directly from the village or the surrounding area. We also offer several part-time positions or the opportunity to work just a few days a week, for example to enable mums to re-enter the world of work.
We are a training company. We offer apprenticeships for young people.
We also pay attention to sustainability when offering our services to guests and locals, for example our Petrus.Secret.Picnic
